by Ren Slavin April 17, 2024

Welcome back to the 101 NEWS podcast, the podcast within a podcast bringing you the latest news and updates from the Marketing world.

This week we will be covering more of the social media and marketing updates that we feel you need to know to boost your marketing strategy – it’s always good to know what’s going on.

Our main podcast has a lot of content covering some fantastic tips, hacks and other bits to help you accelerate your strategy.

This week, we will be covering Meta updates, TikTok’s potential ban in the US, their potential photo-based app and X’s hidden-like count.

Meta’s Updates

As ever, Meta is testing more features to make their platforms more efficient.

We’ll start with Instagram – Select Instagram users will have access to 3-minute-long reels, a new 15-image carousel limit rather than 10, and a new DM feature that will allow you to add files to DMs.These features will make it easier for businesses to showcase their products and services in more detail.

Continuing with Meta’s update, all US Threads users now have access to trending topics – the latest feature on Threads. Much like trending topics on X, users will now be able to see what other users are talking about most on the app.

US ban for TikTok?

The fate of TikTok in the US lies with the Senate after House lawmakers have voted to pass a bill that would ban the app unless the Chinese parent company, ByteDance, sells it.

For many years, these lawmakers have been concerned about Beijing’s influence over the application, with fears that the parent company could be forced to hand over data of millions of US users by the Chinese government.

Although President Joe Biden has said he plans to sign the bill, it could very well get bogged down at the Senate, and former President Donald Trump said this week that he would not support a TikTok ban.

If you are a global company that uses TikTok to reach a wider audience, this story is definitely something to keep an eye on.

X’s Updates

X has announced that likes, retweets and favourite counts will be disappearing from the social media platform’s feed. Users will now have to click on a post to see these metrics.

But why does that matter?

Platforms like X are used to see which topics are currently trending, which is made evident by how many times the post has been liked and shared. Users will now have to swipe right to reply and left to favourite in this new design.

Meme of the Week

In a world of pure imagination… is where the attendees of the Glasgow Willy Wonka experience had to be to make the most of their ticket.

If you’ve been living under a rock, a recent ticketed event has gone viral for not meeting expectations and being, well, an absolute shambles.

The only immersive thing about this event has been the memes, which is why it takes pole position for this week’s meme of the week.

People have been using the poor paid actors as memes, with screenshots of the Oompa Loompa looking distraught being edited into some fantastic memes.

We sincerely hope the actors got paid above and beyond for this mediocre, and arguably traumatising event.

That concludes this week’s roundup!
